Intramural sports have always been an important factor in wide-felt comradery within the ISB community. However, in the past couple of years, it has taken a back seat due to COVID protocols causing a mass drought in recreational sports. The return of internal athletic activities has been long-awaited and it did not disappoint whatsoever.
The first event to take place was a returning tradition, the Patrick Haney World Cup. Players made their own mixed-gender teams and chose a nation to represent. There was a buzz in the hallways leading up to the opening ceremony and, although it was all fun and games, the competitive spirit was obvious. The tournament consisted of two days, the first being a round-robin between all teams and the second being a playoff format with the top three teams and the teacher team qualifying. The turnout was great and the event was an overall success with 7 teams and over 75 competitors.
Since 2014 the tournament has been dedicated to the late Patrick Haney. Patrick was an ISB student-athlete who unfortunately passed away playing in the annual world cup and every year (excluding the COVID era) the opening ceremony and tournament as a whole have been a tribute to him.
Even though it comes second chronologically, the “Nothing Easy” 3X3 was by no means inferior. Abiding by FIBA rules was a slight challenge but in the end the tournament was a massive success. An incredible total of 12 teams signed up allowing for 4 groups and a three-round playoff. Varsity Council hope that the “Nothing Easy” 3X3 will catch on in yeras to come and turn into a long-lasting tradition.
All in all, ISB is very proud to put these events back on and hopes for the best in years to come. Varsity Council has done an amazing job in putting together these activities and looks to put on even more with a potential volleyball 4v4 coming soon. Intramural activities are immensely important in the bonding between students and adds a more fun aspect to sports. Varsity Council wishes to keep the ISB spirit alive through athletics and is doing a great job.
